Jezebel's visit

The Commander's decision to take Offred to Jezebel's marks a pivotal rupture in the careful architecture of their secret arrangement. What began as Scrabble games and hand lotion escalates into a full-blown transgression: a night out, complete with a disguise, a forged pass, and a drive through checkpoints. This is not merely a whim but a calculated demonstration of power, a chance for the Commander to display his mastery by breaking the very rules he helped create. For Offred, the evening becomes a disorienting journey into the regime's hidden heart, where she witnesses the brutal truth of what happens to women who cannot be assimilated and, in a reunion with Moira, confronts the cost of survival and the seduction of a gilded cage.

The Commander's Surprise and the Disguise

The evening begins with the Commander in a flushed, courtly mood, having had a few drinks. He teases Offred with a "little surprise," producing a garment from behind his back: a mauve and pink feather costume, covered in purple sequined stars, clearly a relic from a vanished nightclub act or theater. The garment, worn before and slightly stained, reeks of the black market. Offred, though prudish and disapproving, feels an undeniable allure—the childish thrill of dressing up, the sinful freedom of flaunting the Aunts' teachings. She puts it on, along with too-large mauve high-heeled shoes, and applies makeup using the Commander's old lipstick and eyeliner, smudging and correcting until she achieves a lurid, theatrical effect. He provides a light blue cloak, Serena Joy's, to conceal her costume through the checkpoints. The Commander, excited, takes her hand, and they glide through the darkening streets in the Whirlwind, with Nick driving, his posture stiff and disapproving.

The Journey and the Hotel Brothel

At the second checkpoint, the Commander orders Offred to lie on the floor of the car, her forehead against his shoes, as Wives are not allowed through the gateway. She feels the hard, beetle-like shells of his shoes, inscrutable and impersonal. After passing through, they arrive at a back entrance of a red-brick building. The Commander slips a purple tag onto her wrist, telling her to say she is an "evening rental" if questioned. They enter a concrete corridor, then a softly lit, carpeted hallway with numbered doors, like a hotel. Emerging into a central courtyard with a fountain and glass elevators, Offred recognizes the place: it is the hotel where she once met Luke for their afternoon trysts, now transformed into a club for officers. The women are dressed in a bizarre mélange of costumes—feathers, lingerie, bathing suits, cheerleader outfits—all scavenged or salvaged. The Commander, showing off, leads her through the crowd, his spine straightening, his voice assuming a sprightly jocularity. He winks at her, demonstrating his mastery of the world, breaking the rules under their noses.

The Club's Purpose and the Commander's Justification

The Commander explains that Jezebel's is a club for officers, senior officials, and trade delegations, a place to stimulate business and gather information. He claims it is a natural outlet for men's need for variety, a part of "Nature's plan." Offred, growing fed up, asks about the women. He tells her some are "real pros" from the time before, while others were former professionals—a sociologist, a lawyer, an executive—who prefer this to the alternatives. He coyly suggests she might prefer it herself, but Offred deflects. He orders her a gin and tonic, a forbidden luxury, and she secretly relishes the idea. As he goes to the bar, Offred spots Moira.

Reunion with Moira

Moira is dressed absurdly in a black satin outfit that is too large, with a drooping rabbit ear headpiece and a wad of cotton for a tail. She is smoking, her face blank. Offred wills her to look, and Moira eventually sees her, giving a small head jerk toward the women's washroom. Offred, using the excuse of needing the washroom, navigates the room, showing her purple tag. Inside the pink-lit rest area, she finds Moira. They hug, and Moira, with her characteristic bluntness, asks what Offred is doing there. Offred explains she is temporary, smuggled in by her Commander. Moira dismisses him as "the pits" and interprets his actions as a "crummy power trip." In whispered conversations, Moira recounts her escape from the Red Center, her time on the Underground Femaleroad, her capture just before crossing the border into Maine, and her choice between the Colonies and Jezebel's. She describes the Colonies as toxic cleanup squads where people die within three years, and Jezebel's as a gilded prison with face cream, drink, and drugs, where the women work only nights. Offred is horrified by Moira's indifference, her loss of volition, but Moira shrugs it off, joking that it is "butch paradise." Offred, wanting a story of heroism, is left with the reality of Moira's survival.

The Aftermath and Offred's Complicity

After the reunion, the Commander takes a room key and leads Offred to a hotel room identical to those from her past. He undresses, revealing a small belly and wisps of hair, and tries to initiate sex, but Offred lies inert. He turns out the lights, disappointed. Offred, in her mind, screams at herself to fake it, to get it over with. The evening ends with Offred back in her room, scraping off the lipstick and hoping nothing shows. The visit to Jezebel's has exposed the regime's hypocrisy and the brutal choices women face, but it has also revealed Offred's own complicity and the dangerous, seductive pull of a life that offers a few compensations. The encounter with Moira, who has made a kind of peace with her captivity, leaves Offred shaken, questioning her own notions of resistance and survival.
